511th Aero Engineers Squadron
Students enrolled in the classes automatically qualify to be members of the 511th Aero Engineers Squadron club. This club meets at various times outside of class times for model airplane building and especially model FLYING, field trips, and "Show and tell" activities. If the link type trainer and zip line glider are operational, these activities could be shared, some maintenance activities, and occasional technology lectures if desired. Membership is made up only of past and present students. There is no membership fee. Just bring enthusiasm. Donations of model airplane building materials will always be gratefully accepted.

About the Instructor
Retired engineer Norm Stein has often thought how much he would enjoy teaching young students about Aeronautical Engineering by having them study, build, and test run model airplanes they build from scratch. Norm has worked for a number of companies over his long career including Hiller Helicopter (a helicopter he designed hangs in the Hiller Aviation Museum), Lockheed, Bechtel, and Stanford University. He was recently featured in the news when the local paper did an article about him and his Fall 2012 Class and syndicated columnist Mike Cassidy did a feature story on him and the engine he designed and built in his garage.

What is Aeronautical Engineering?
Aeronautical engineering is a branch of aerospace engineering, though some people use the two terms interchangeably. The field encompasses aircraft design, and the management of the physical forces that act on aircraft. These primarily include the sciences of propulsion and aerodynamics. Many would also consider that aeronautical engineering covers the development and selection of materials and equipment that are utilized on aircraft. In short, it is a broad field that intersects with many other disciplines.
